Wallpaper Pattern Repeats Explained: A Guide to Pattern Matching

Wallpaper specifications include a repeat measurement and a match type. These details explain how the design joins from one strip to the next and help estimate how much paper a room will need. Check the product label before ordering, and ask us if the room has tricky walls or corners.

What is a pattern repeat?

The repeat is the vertical distance, usually shown in centimetres, between one point in a design and the next time that same point appears. It helps describe the scale of the pattern and affects how each strip is cut. You can usually find it in the wallpaper’s product details or on the roll label.

What is a pattern match?

The match type tells you how the pattern should meet across neighbouring strips. Product details may show a diagram as well as a written instruction. For example, a wallpaper with a 64 cm repeat and a straight match repeats every 64 cm and joins at the same height from strip to strip.

Half-drop match

With a half-drop match, each adjacent strip starts half a repeat lower than the previous one. If the repeat is 64 cm, the next strip is offset by 32 cm. The staggered layout creates a more varied flow across the wall and can increase offcuts.

Straight match

For a straight match, the motif meets at the same height across every strip. Line up the design at the edge before trimming and hanging each new length.

Free match

A free match has no set point that must line up. It is often used for plain, textured or irregular designs. Check the manufacturer’s directions, since even subtle textures may have a preferred hanging orientation.

How to estimate the number of rolls

  1. Measure each wall’s width and height. Add the widths of walls that meet if you want the pattern to continue around the corner; measure separate areas individually when alignment matters.

  2. Find the roll width, roll length, pattern repeat and match type for the chosen paper. Allow each strip enough length to reach the wall height, trim the edges and align the design. Round the cut length up to a suitable repeat.

  3. Divide the roll length by the planned cut length to estimate usable strips per roll. Divide the wall width by the roll width to estimate the strips needed, rounding up.

  4. Divide the number of strips needed by the usable strips per roll, then round up to whole rolls. For example, a 4 m wall using 53 cm-wide paper needs about 8 strips. If each 10 m roll gives 3 usable strips, plan for 3 rolls before adding any extra allowance.

This is a planning example only. Match type, trimming, wall height and room details can change the final quantity. Use the product’s calculator where available or have the measurements checked before ordering.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the repeat and match symbol when estimating how many strips come from a roll.

  • Using wall area alone: a square-metre total does not account for cut lengths or pattern alignment.

  • Cutting several strips before checking the match and confirming the pattern is running in the right direction.

Practical tips

  • Plan for some waste around windows, doors and other openings when estimating rolls.

  • Allow extra paper if the design needs to wrap into a window recess or around a feature.

  • Keep labels and roll numbers together, and check that rolls are from the same batch before hanging.
